As an Arizona family photographer, I am often asked for my opinions on what to wear for family pictures. That’s why I am so happy today to share with you some of my tips and favorite places to shop for kids! I hope that this post can help you out as you navigate the tricky waters of getting ready for your next photo session. Before I get to the list, let me share some frequently asked questions to help guide you even better!

What are the best colors for family pictures?

The color palette you choose will be totally up to you. I never ask clients to wear certain colors as I value your opinions and preferences over mine. However, since starting my photography business I can tell you one thing: start with neutrals! This includes blacks, whites, beiges, and grays. Then add one or two more accent colors (if you want). Adding accent colors is a way to bring in seasonal colors like burgundy for winter or mustard yellow for fall.

How should I dress my children for family photos?

If you’ve been asking yourself “What should my kids wear to family pictures?” know that you are not alone! It can be confusing to know how to dress everyone in your family, so here are some of my tips for dressing children:

  • Have them wear comfortable shoes (that look nice of course) that you know they’ll be able to walk in. We will most likely be doing a lot of walking at our session. Nothing like a melt down over shoes that your 3 year old is uncomfortable wearing…
  • For girls – I love dresses (think linen, not tulle), rompers, and overalls. When wearing overalls, layer a simple shirt or sweater with texture underneath.
  • For boys – I love button ups + chinos, rompers, overalls, and even button ups with shorts.
  • When in doubt, you can never go wrong with a classic silhouette! Choose time-tested styles over trendy options to keep the look cohesive.
  • Don’t forget the accessories! Bows, bow ties, earings, jackets, vests, etc. These can really add so much to your photos!
  • For children under 5 don’t dress them until you get to the session location. TRUST US – you’d be surprised how many children throw up while driving in the mountains for pictures, spill a sippy cup, or just manage to destroy their outfits while in the car.
