Tips for family photos

Today’s post is going to be full of tips for family photos. We’ve all been there before- in that state of fear and paralysis. We ask ourselves, how can I keep the kids happy?! How can I keep my spouse happy?! What if everyone has a meltdown and falls apart?! *Cue nervous breakdown*

I’m here to tell you- have no fear! But also, lower your expectations! Assume everything will go well but also assume everything might just fall apart. No matter what happens, I assure you that I will do my part to not only create a fun and loving atmosphere during your photoshoot but also help you know what to do to prepare. Below are some of my favorite tips!

5 Tips for Family Photos

  1. Wear shoes that are easy to walk in. Most likely our session will take place outdoors and some walking will be required. Sometimes there may be a flat dirt path but other times it will be rocky terrain. You can always check ahead with me about what it will be like, but play safe and wear comfortable shoes. This also applies to what shoes your kids wear. Trust me, nothing causes a toddler meltdown at a photoshoot more than them not being able to walk or run like they would like! Of course I would NOT recommend letting them wear their favorite Paw Patrol running shoes 😂 There are plenty of sturdy, comfortable shoes out there! For sturdy, comfortable baby and toddler shoes, I love this brand.
  2. Don’t dress your babies and toddlers until you arrive. Many locations will require at least a 20 minute drive which means that your baby or toddler may need to eat on the way. Safest way to make sure they don’t spill on themselves? Dress them once you arrive 👍
  3. Bring not messy, colorless candy as rewards. Sometimes we all need rewards for getting our photos taken 😉 Toddlers and little ones may need a little more encouragement along the way. I love brining smarties as an easy reward. They won’t get all over their hands or turn teeth colors!
  4. Choose a post-photo session reward beforehand. I would encourage communicating to your kids what your expectations are for their behavior during our shoot and then choosing a reward together to go do if they cooperate. Ice cream is always a favorite for many families!
  5. Have fun and lower your expectations. You will most likely be stressed about something before or during our shoot. Take a deep breath and remind yourself to have fun! Managing kids can be a lot of work but there is also beauty in it all. Let’s walk, run, play, and of course grab a few of those looking-at-the-camera shots!
