This snowy maternity session up Big Cottonwood Canyon at the Spruces Campground is one of my all time favorites! I am so excited to share some of my favorite images from this unforgettable session. Earlier this month we were able to go to Utah, where I am originally from, to meet my newest baby nephew. Not only was I able to capture him at this time I was also able to fit in some other sessions while there (I make visits often and always seem to fill up my time there capturing amazing humans!)

My beautiful cousin Laci is pregnant with her 5th baby and told me months ago she had never had a maternity session done. We chatted for a little and I convinced her she should do one…and she obliged. We texted back and forth the weeks leading up to the shoot about the location and what dress she should get. Let’s just say that I was VERY happy with how the dress and its beautiful neutral tone meshed so well with the snowy, wonderland backdrop! Seriously one of the prettiest snow maternity sessions!

Snowy Maternity Session at the Spruces Campground

Snow has become sooo magical since I moved to Arizona just over 6 years ago. Growing up in Utah I was pretty oblivious to how beautiful it is there and also HATED the snow. Now that snow is so unusual for me to experience I seem to appreciate it more and more! Laci and I were hoping to find snow for our session and since it has been pretty snowless in the Salt Lake Valley we decided to head up Big Cottonwood Canyon and park at the Spruces Campground.

Luckily for us it had just snowed the day before and so we had a fresh powder…which actually was a good yet bad thing (haha…cars getting stuck, me falling in thigh high snow…) We were able to park in the parking lot and make a short walk into the forested area and it was absolutely BREATHTAKING.

I often get questions regarding maternity sessions, so here are some quick q&a’s:

When is the best time to have maternity photos done?

I generally recommend having your maternity photos done between 28-34 weeks. We want a beautiful baby belly but don’t want you too close to your due date! That time frame typically means that you are still pretty mobile AND guarantees that you’ll be able to receive your maternity photos before your due date! I would suggest reaching out once you’ve made it to 20 weeks and we will get you scheduled.

What should I bring to my maternity session?

I would HIGHLY recommend bringing your husband/significant other and any other children! While solo maternity photos are absolutely beautiful I also think it is so magical to capture the excitement your significant other and children have about the new baby! Not only that, having more people creates more opportunities for interaction and thus candid, heart-warming moments in your session!

Other things you may consider: Bring water! Wear comfortable walking shoes and then change once we get to the different locations- your feet will thank you!

What should I wear to my maternity session?

Personally, I love flowy dresses! I love when they are fitted tight around the bust and then flowy. These types of dresses provide for a lot of movement which will make your photos look even more interesting and beautiful to look at. I love having my clients twirl and swoosh their dresses! If you’d rather wear something more tight-fitting, that is great too! What’s most important is that you feel comfortable and beautiful.

As far as what color to wear, I personally love images of my clients wearing soft, muted colors.

I hope you enjoy the images we captured! I absolutely love being able to work in both Arizona and Utah. If you are looking for a photographer to capture you during your amazing pregnancy, please send me an inquiry through the “Contact” tab. I would absolutely LOVE to work with you!
