Since a few days ago was National Dog day, today’s post is full of tips for dog photography. I am also a dog lover myself and love when families bring their dogs with them to our photo sessions. Bringing a dog to your family photos is always a fun idea! However, if you aren’t prepared it can become extra chaotic and even overwhelming. Following these tips for your upcoming family session will be worthwhile!
5 Tips for Dog Photography
- Bring someone with you that knows your dog well. This person can hold the dog’s leash while we get pictures of just the humans in your family. It’s also good to have them come in case your dog isn’t cooperating and we need extra hands. I would highly suggest you bring someone who your dog trusts and loves. They can be awesome at motivating your dog to cooperate!
- Bring your dogs favorite treats. Reward them for listening and following your directions! Plan on giving your dog a treat every 10-15 minutes or as often as you think necessary.
- Bring your dogs favorite squeaky toy. I’ll hold it (or have someone hold it right behind me). This often gets your dog to look right at the camera! If your dog is a bit hyper, maybe consider bringing a toy that he won’t cause him to jump but just gain his attention.
- Be patient. It may take us a few tries to get the perfect shot(s). That’s okay! Getting frustrated or losing your cool will NOT help the situation.
- Bring a water dish in case she gets thirsty! Also some poop bags…cause ya never know…
Other Things to Consider
Since we well be shooting in a public space, I would highly suggest you only bring your dog if he is well trained and people friendly. It is very likely that people will be walking by. Will your dog be alarmed? Will he bark and become too rowdy?
Does your dog listen to commands? Is she well trained? While I have worked with dogs on a wide spectrum, dogs who are well trained are more likely to cooperate.
Finally, before deciding on a location, I would double check that your dog is allowed at that location. There can be rules/regulations about dogs not being allowed or on a leash. This may determine if you want to bring him or not!
