How to look good in pictures

Today’s post is all about how to look good in pictures. Yes, it sounds a bit vain but I think we’ve all wondered how we can get the best pictures of ourselves! When paying for a photographer, I know the stakes are high! Not only are you investing a lot of money in your upcoming session but also investing a lot of time and energy. That’s why I’m writing this post today! Let’s make sure you get the most out of your session and are wowed by the photos you get back!

Self Love and Body Acceptance Above All Else

Before I list the 3 tips that I think can really help you look good in your photos I want to discuss self love and body acceptance. As a human, I am fully aware of how insecure I can be about my own body and appearance. I am far from perfect and no where close to looking like those models that have lined magazines and billboards for my whole life. You know what though? I’ve come to accept that and still choose to love myself for who I am and what I look like!

It has been so interesting as a photographer to work with so many different people. It’s fascinating to me that I can edit and stare at someone’s face for hours, not seeing any flaws, to only have them tell me that they hate their “big nose” or “double chins.” I’m always so surprised. Unfortunately I tend to do the same things, but I’m working on it.

You will not love your photos if you do not love and accept yourself first. You could have the best makeup artist, best photographer, best stylist chose your clothes, etc. and still not like your photos. So the next time you see a photo of yourself and cringe, please know that you are beautiful just as you are. Try believing that and telling yourself that everyday. It will change your world! *Rant over*

3 Tips to Get Good Pictures of Yourself

Now is the time where I get to share with you three of my favorite tips on how to get the best pictures of yourself during a photo session! If you would like the full list, click here to subscribe to my email list!

1. Details in Your Outfit(s)

For your session, I recommend considering the following:

  • Accessories: earrings, hats, watches, shoes, jewelry, etc. Add accessories to your outfit that represent your personality, your branding, etc. Even the smallest pop of color can really add to your photos!
  • Layers: jackets, vests, sweaters. Bring one (or two) to your session. Layers add more interest to your photos and also give you something to interact or hold onto. I love using pockets or having my clients move their hands up and down the lapels of their jackets. It adds more variety to your photos! Not to mention, we can get some shots without the jacket/sweater and it will be as if you have a whole other outfit!

2. Take Pictures Beforehand

Too often people come to our sessions never having worn the outfit they are getting captured in! While there are a ton of things to do in order to prepare for our session, I would encourage you to not only try on your outfit but then to have someone take pictures of you wearing it.

If you’re a parent, I would suggest moving around and making sure nothing falls out while doing so. You never know if you’ll be chasing down a toddler. It’s also just smart to realize (this is for everyone) that we will be getting a variety of poses from standing, to walking, to sitting. Make sure you like how your outfit looks on you while you do all of those things!

3. Relax + Share Any Insecurities if Needed

If you skipped over the first part of this post, make sure to head back and read it! I am a body-positive, self love photographer and work hard before, during, and after to help you feel great about yourself. That being said, I know we have little things we are insecure about. That’s why I would rather have you let me know how I can help coach you through those insecurities before we start our session.

Next, just relax! Remember to take deeeeeeep breaths and I promise you we’ll have a great time. I’ve got some pretty (bad) jokes that will make you laugh and we will become friends! Don’t stress so much. Relaxed photos are always the best kind!
